چکیده

The neutral gas environment of a comet is largely influenced by dissociation of parent molecules created at the surface of the comet and collisions of all the involved species. We compare the results from a kinetic model of the neutral cometary environment with measurements from the Neutral Mass Spectrometer and the Dust Impact Detection System onboard the Giotto spacecraft taken during the fly-by at Comet 1P/Halley in 1986. We also show that our model is in good agreement with contemporaneous measurements obtained by the International Ultraviolet Explorer, sounding rocket experiments, and various ground based observations. The model solves the Boltzmann equation with a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo technique (Tenishev, V., Combi, M., Davidsson, B. [2008]. Astrophys. J. 685, 659–677) by tracking trajectories of gas molecules and dust grains under the influence of the comet’s weak gravity field with momentum exchange among particles modeled in a probabilistic manner. The cometary nucleus is considered to be the source of dust and the parent species (in our model: H2O, CO, H2CO, CO2, CH3OH, C2H6, C2H4, C2H2, HCN, NH3, and CH4) in the coma. Subsequently our model also tracks the corresponding dissociation products (H, H2, O, OH, C, CH, CH2, CH3, N, NH, NH2, C2, C2H, C2H5, CN, and HCO) from the comet’s surface all the way out to 10 km. As a result we are able to further constrain cometary the gas production rates of CO (13%), CO2 (2.5%), and H2CO (1.5%) relative to water without invoking unknown extended sources. 2011 Elsevier Inc. Formation of jets in Comet 19P/Borrelly by subsurface geysers

Observations of the inner coma of Comet 19P/Borrelly with the camera on the Deep Space 1 spacecraft revealed several highly collimated dust jets emanating from the nucleus. The observed jets can be produced by acceleration of evolved gas from a subsurface cavity through a narrow orifice to the surface. As long as the cavity is larger than the orifice, the pressure in the cavity will be greater ...

Similarities between in situ measurements of local dust light scattering and dust flux impact data within the coma of 1P/Halley

In situ measurements of the light locally scattered by cometary dust, as well as the local dust spatial density are only available for one comet, 1P/Halley. These data, returned from the Optical Probe Experiment (OPE) and the Dust Impact Detection System (DIDSY) aboard the European Space Agency spacecraft Giotto, are re-assessed in light of the recent improvements in the analysis and calibratio...

The Distributed Co in Comet Halley

Examination of the spatial distribution of CO intensity of Comet Halley indicates that a large fraction of CO originates from the refractory organic component in the coma, rather than directly from the volatiles in the nucleus. Based on the fluffy aggregate interstellar dust comet model, we have estimated the upper limits of the total amount of CO provided by coma dust. The implications from th...

Water ions , dust and CN in comet 46 P / Wirtanen ?

Comet 46P/Wirtanen was observed at Pik Terskol (Northern Caucasus) with the 2m-Zeiss-Telescope of the International Centre for Astronomical and Medico-Ecological Investigations, Kiev, on March 10 and 11, 1997. The twochannel focal reducer of the MPAe was used. It allows observations of comets simultaneously in a red and a blue filter passband. The comet was observed with interference filters ce...

Injection of large grains into orbits around comet nuclei

Starting from the nucleus surface, the motion of dust boulders of diameters larger than the solar radiation pressure resonance size (Richter & Keller 1995) is investigated by numerical integration of the motion equation for times larger than the comet orbital period. The motion equation takes into account the comet nucleus gravity force, the solar gravity force, the solar radiation pressure for...
